Rooted and Established, 2019, 36 x 24"

March 2013 marks the date when I stumbled upon these epic stumps on my run in Corolla, NC. I was dumbfounded by how these pieces of driftwood, but more notably, huge stumps, all wound up on the beach. More than that, they were all upright, seemed to all have their own pools of water around them, and were rooted in the sand.

My first thought was how in the world did they get here and how ironic that these dead trees are now surrounded by what they most need: water.

6 Days of Drawing:

I haven't tried my hand at detailed graphite drawings in a while, but given that this vision was clear and I was ready for production as opposed to conceptual development at this point, it seemed like a natural subject matter. My goal from here is to develop a series of these drawings based on the stumps I found on the beach.
